SAFEGUARDING
The Welfare team work with management, coaches and other staff members and volunteers towards the common goal of achieving and maintaining a positive, child-centered environment.
Formerly known as Parents in Sport Week, the campaign will aim to help parents understand their crucial safeguarding role in their child’s sport.
Sport is safest when everyone plays their role in keeping children safe.
The new campaign will run year-round in partnership with the NSPCC, with a focused awareness week annually during the first week of October. In 2022, Keeping Your Child Safe in Sport week takes place 3 – 9 October.
This will support our aim to continue to provide information and resources to help parents to keep their children safe in sport throughout the year.

“I have been volunteering for over 20 years now and have a lot of Safeguarding and Child Protection experience. I have done a variety of different roles over the years including being a Foster Carer, Chair of Governors, Charity Trustee, Lay Member on Hampshire Safeguarding Childrens Board, Chairman of local Scout/Guide Group and lots more. This is not my first time as a British Gymnastics Welfare Officer, as I have previously been a Welfare Officer at other gymnastics clubs that my daughters have either trained or coached at. I am really looking forward to working alongside everyone at Basingstoke Gymnastics Club.”

“Coming from a competitive background in a few sports including gymnastics, swimming and Ice skating along with coaching skills I hope to bring to the welfare team a variety of experiences. I now work as an Event Manager & Executive assistant for a Global Company during the day and spend my evenings at the club.
Whilst a mum to my 2 girls who both found their passion for gymnastics at Basingstoke, I spend many days a week at the club whilst they train and hope to support them along with all our gymnasts and coaches to have the best experience possible.
Volunteering as a welfare officer is enjoyable and it’s been great getting to know everyone whilst lending a helping hand and a listening ear. “

“My son has been attending BGC since he could walk and is now in the Teamgym squad. I have over 30 years experience of working with children and vulnerable adults in both voluntary and paid roles. For the last 3 years I have been working as an Investigating Officer investigating safeguarding concerns, abuse of vulnerable adults and disciplinary issues. I hope that my knowledge and skills enable me to make a valuable and positive contribution to Basingstoke Gymnastics Club. I am committed to safeguarding the welfare of all gymnasts and coaches and working with others to provide a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone at Basingstoke Gymnastics Club, visitors to the club and the wider gymnastics community.”

“Having recently become an ‘ex grassroots football coach’ serving the Basingstoke community for over the past 12 year’s, I decided that I wanted to offer my help and support in a new role, so when the Welfare opportunity came about, I jumped at the chance to join! Hoping to bring some of my knowledge of working with Children and welfare along with me. I’m also a parent of two Elite gymnasts within the Aerobics Squad and have been part of the BGC family since 2012, Not quite sure where I get my time from as I also sit on the clubs fundraising committee.”

The Welfare Team are currently reviewing the Club’s policies and procedures where they relate to the welfare and safeguarding of children, young people and vulnerable adults who attend the club. Please bear with us as we update these policies which will be available for members and the public to view on this page shortly.

The email address is regularly monitored and one of our volunteer club welfare officers will respond to you.
The CPSU (Child Protection in Sport) unit of the NSPCC has a helpline for concerns regarding bullying or abuse in gymnastics.
